Hi there.
I am currently putting together a CFD model for a theatre auditorium - trying to balance simplicity (to produce a stable model with a reasonable run time) with a representation that will still give meaningful results.
The theatre will have individual under-seat diffusers, but I am wanting to model these as strips to prevent the calculation grid from becoming overly complex. The problem lies in the curved nature of the auditorium - one rectangular diffuser for each tier just won't fit on the crescent shaped tier surface! I am currently modelling the raised tiers as component blocks.
- Ideally I would like to model a polygonal diffuser, whereas the current version seems to only allow for rectangular. Are there plans to allow polygonal diffusers in the future?
- One option I am looking at is to simplify the curve of the auditorium using say 3 or 5 straight lines and to model the tiers as component blocks. One problem I forsee with this is that when drawing diffusers onto component blocks (I'm not sure about other objects) I seem to be only able to draw rectangles with sides that are square on to the X and Y axes, whereas I will need to be able to draw rectangles that are parallel to the edge of the tier that I am drawing it on. Drawing the rectangle square on to the X and Y axes and then rotating it to suit would not work because it would not fit on the component block surface in the first place without being rotated (because of its long and narrow shape). Any suggestions?
My post is getting lengthy but here are another couple of questions/comments:
- The programme does not seem to let be draw construction lines on the surface level of component blocks - the tool is there but the lines do not "stick" once drawn.
- It would be really helpful if there was an option to allow construction lines to be viewable at different levels - e.g. if construction lines I drew at block level were viewable right down to surface level.
The version I'm using is 3.0.0.047

You might consider representing the angled diffuser in the form of a number of adjacent discrete elements (see attached screenshot). If you take this approach, I would suggest that you avoid using too small an element otherwise the resulting grid may be too fine.

This has been fixed now.

We'll look at implementing this for a future update.

Thanks a lot
Yes I ended up representing the diffusers in a similar way to how you described, albeit in a much more simplified way (if I had modelled them lining up like a strip it would have taken ages, since there are about 20 tiers in the auditorium). Hopefully the results are reasonably still valid since it's a displacement system - the air doesn't rise because it's velocity but because of the heat generated by people and lights.
