Dear Andy:
I would like to pose you a small question:
I´working in the Energetic Model of a Building which has window shadowing devices (Louvres).
I've noticed that I can't model vertical blades. I can't also define the blade thickness. Other thing that concerns me is the fact that if I have diferent windows in the same surface and I can't define diferent devices for each window.
In order to solve some of these questions I' m trying to model 'my' Louvres using Component Blocks to define all geometric properties of the devices. Is it a good Option, or the way EnergyPlus deals with these objects is different from the Local Shadows object?
Your solution to use component blocks as shading devices for Windows can work well, especially as they include a thickness. Of course you will realise that these component blocks are fixed and so cannot be controlled based on solar radiation, internal temperature etc etc as standard window blinds can be.
