Moving blocks to make them adjacent

Hi,

I upload the file Contigua - Mexicali.dsb

It's a dwelling's pool. They are spread out. I want to simulate the change when they are adjacent. As you can see, the houses for a zig-zag, so the walls don't match exactly.

The walls have horizontal subsurfaces (stripes) because its a different material.

The problem is that when I move a house to make it adjacent to the next, the stripes dissapear and the part of the wall that didn't match shows "Wall (with hole)". Where did that hole come from? I don't even see any hole.

I set the matching are as adiabatic (since all the houses have similar temperatures), but the results are kind of weird and I think it has someting to do the dissapering of the subsurface stripes and the appearence of those phantom holes.

Hi Carlos,

Some points:

First of all, you are modeling each house as a block into a 'building'. I don't know if it is your intention, but is very advisable to model each house as an independent building, in order to get the correct data after simulations. It's possible to model all the houses in a file (several buildings into a site), or model each alternative in a separate file. I recommend the second option, using component blocks (adiabatic where necessary) to model surrounding houses - see the next point:

You are modeling every 'context' house (zonas auxiliares) as building block, which will affect simulations perform and results. It's better to use component blocks, which doesn't generate thermal zones, to model this kind of surrounding objects.

About your questions:

DesignBuilder automatically generates connection surfaces between adjacent blocks, which in this case will be considered as internal partitions. Openings and sub-surfaces that interfere with this connection surface are deleted automatically. As explained above, I suggest using an adiabatic component block adjacent to the house (setting adjacency as 1. Automatic in Constructions tab), and draw sub-surfaces only in the surface that remains 'free'.

It is very possible that weird results are more related with the modeling issues pointed above.

Hi Arturo,

I modelled all houses into the same 'building' because creating different buildings, DB didn't allow me to copy the house from one building into the other. Since they were several, it was much time waste to draw the same house several times. Do you know how to avoid this restriction?

-Each alternative is being simulated in different files.

I tryed drawing the context houses with building blocks and with component blocks. I wanted the second one to speed up the simulation, but actually it was near the same time as building blocks (with no subsurfaces), so I preferred having these thermal zones, since actually they do exist (I had preferred to have them as exact copies, with windows, etc., but it did slowed down the simulation).

-Thanks for the explation about why DB dissapears the subsurfaces when walls become adjacent.

-You did not answer the main problem "the phantom hole". The subsurfaces dissapear: OK. The part of the exterior wall that matches another become internal partition: OK. BUT, the remaining part, in contact with the exterior says Wall (with hole). Based on the different simulations I did to check the sensitivity of the changes I made, the weird results do have to do something with that, not with what you pointed out. Anyway, wy is that "with hole" appearing and what does it mean?

I read v1.5 correceted some bugs about adjacencies, might this be one?
