"Cut-outs" in building faces & Reversed Wall C

Hi Andy.

When creating buildings that have small "cut-outs" in their faces, is it possible to create these small cut-outs in an easier manner than having to place cuts through the entire building then rejoin the seperated blocks?

I have tried creating partitions for these spaces, then creating a hole that covers the entire external face. This seems to work fine, then one can change the construction of the partitions to match the external wall construction. The problem arises when occasional partitions will come up with the reverse of the correct exposed wall construction (i.e. lining on the outside, bricks on the inside).

Any help you could offer would be most appreciated.

I think I understand the modelling problem you are describing here, but it would help if you could upload a graphic image to help me advise you properly.

When you reply you can use the controls under the 'Add an attachment' header to upload an image file.

Please find attached below two images that might help to explain what I'm trying to do. The first is a view which shows the external south face of the building being modelled. Circled in red are two cut-outs which are removed from the building's facacde.

The second image shows just the floor of interest, on which the cutouts are located.

One can see (highlighted by the arrow) that the construction of this element is reversed, relative to its fellows. The construction is that of an exterior wall, yet it shows up with the interior face in the unconditioned space, and the exterior face into the occupied space.

Andy,

Looking at the images you uploaded, I think you have created your cutout as a zone and added a hole in the external surface. This could work provided you use the 'Full exterior and interior' solar distribution algorithm to get radiation through interior Windows, and are using version 1.0.2 or later (earlier versions did not transmit solar radiation through holes). Also you would need to make sure that all internal constructions in the cutout are set appropriately.

BUT I would recommend creating the cutout, not as a zone, but by indenting the first floor perimeter to give the correct shape and making the cutout bit external. This is a much more reliable way to get the modelling correct.
