Yes, would like to know if this is still a problem with the latest ExpandObjects/DB version (even if beta version, if possible). Would like to track it down for you.

Energy,
We will need your help to solve this problem!
Could you send us a diagnostics.log file generated immediately after a failed compact hvac simulation?
Click on Tools menu and then 'Show log file' then click on the 'Send to DesignBuilder support' button. This uploads the log file to our website - please also let me know when you have done this so we can find your log and look into the problem.

We may have found a fix for this problem for some computers and will be releasing a new beta (1.6.3 or later) in next few days. If you have been experiencing this problem with Compact HVAC, I would be very grateful if you could give 1.6.3 (or later) a try when it becomes available to see if it fixes it more generally.
Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,
I finally got a chance to upgrade to the latest DB release (1.6.9.003) and had some spare time to fiddle with this problem again. So I changed program options to use the recommended internal dll (2.2.0.025) for calculation, but the "error expanding compact HVAC..." message keeps popping up. I reran those commands you recommended in your 17 Dec 2007 17:42 post on the first page of this topic (ie. manually check in.idf presence and run ExpandObject from commandline) and it seems that in.idf is generated before the "error expanding compact HVAC..." message and manually executing ExpandObjects from command line generates expanded.idf with no errors. So it is a little progress compared with the previous attempts, but still not working through DB interface as expected. The last few dozens of lines in the log file is as follows:
| Code: | Energy+.idd - fn C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\Energy+.idd
Energy+.idd - version 2.2.0.025
EnergyPlus installed and up-to-date
EnergyPlus license check pass
RunEP 1
C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\in.idf exists (1) : True
RunEP Copied C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\in.idf to C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\compact.idf
C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\in.idf exists (2) : True
C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\in.idf exists (3) : True
ShellAndWaitForTermination BatchFileContent:
C:
cd "\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\"
erase marker
Call ExpandObjects.exe
copy "dbrunep.bat" marker
ShellAndWaitForTermination sStdOut:
Error expanding compact HVAC descriptions
C:\Documents and Settings\hallik\Local Settings\Application Data\DesignBuilder\EnergyPlus\Expanded.idf not generated
Please contact DesignBuilder support
RunEP Exit
Ended SSCalcOptions.CalcSingleBuildingNoDialog |
So can I try to tweak something to help to solve the issue? I have some spare time to devote next couple of days.
All the best,
Jaanus

Hi Januus,
OK here's the latest advice on getting past this problem. Go to Program options dialog and on the Developer tab change the Shell option from 1-API-pipe to 5-Basic. This new 'Basic' option provides an new 'low-tech' way to launch the ExpandObject.exe program and the workaround has helped get Compact HVAC working for others with the problem.
Please let us know how you get on.
Andy

That's good news.
Since this fix seems to be successful we'll change DB so that it automatically uses this method if the standard API-Pipe method fails.
Thanks for letting us know.
